1. What is Procyanidin B2?
Procyanidin is a natural polyphenolic compound, which is one of the most powerful free radical scavengers discovered so far. It has powerful anti-oxidation and anti-non-enzymatic glycation activity, and has a strong cardiovascular protective effect. As a natural plant component, it shows no significant toxicity and is widely used globally. Among them, dimers are the most widely distributed among various proanthocyanidins and have the strongest antioxidant activity. Procyanidin B2 is the main component of GSPE, and the activity of Procyanidin B2 is the strongest among the eight isomers. Numerous studies have demonstrated that procyanidin exhibits significantly stronger antioxidant and free radical-scavenging capabilities than vitamins E and C. It helps prevent and treat various diseases linked to free radical damage, including heart disease and arthritis, and also improves microcirculation.

3. What is the Process Flow Diagram?
In the industrial production of high-purity and high-activity procyanidin B2, the progressiveness, environmental protection, and economy of its technological process are crucial.
3.1 Raw material pretreatment
After cleaning and removing nuclei, the raw materials are subjected to freeze-drying (Lyophilization) or low-temperature drying, and then crushed to a specific mesh size (such as 40-60 mesh) to increase the contact area with the extraction solvent and improve the extraction efficiency.[1]
3.2 Core Extraction Technology: Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE)
Subcritical water extraction (SWE) has demonstrated significant advantages in the research of procyanidin B2 extraction.
3.3 Traditional and Auxiliary Extraction Methods
Despite the obvious advantages of SWE technology, traditional solvent extraction methods (such as using ethanol-water mixtures) are still used in some productions due to their low equipment requirements and mature technology. Additionally, techniques including ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) improve mass transfer and reduce extraction time.[3]
3.4 Purification and refining process
The crude extract, containing impurities such as polyphenols, sugars, and pigments, undergoes purification, including solid-liquid separation, concentration, macroporous adsorption resin process, and drying, to obtain high-purity procyanidin B2.[3]

4. Is procyanidin B2 Effective? How Does It Work?
Free radicals and the resulting lipid peroxidation underlie and contribute to a wide range of diseases, including heart disease, arteriosclerosis, phlebitis, arthritis, allergies, Alzheimer's disease, coronary heart disease, and cancer.
Yin Huiyong, a researcher at the Key Laboratory of Nutrition Metabolism and Food Safety, Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, published an online publication titled Polyphenolic Proanthocyanidin-B2 Suppresses Proliferation of Liver Cancer Cells on Redox Biology and Hepatocellular Carcinogenesis through Direct Binding and Inhibiting AKT Activity research paper. Research has revealed that Procyanidin B2 (OPC-B2)-an active compound derived from floral polyphenols-acts as a novel allosteric inhibitor of AKT. It directly binds to AKT, inhibiting its phosphorylation and thereby exerting anti-tumor effects. Key residues Lys297 and Arg86 on the AKT protein are critical for this interaction with OPC-B2. These findings propose a potential treatment strategy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

5. What Are the Applications of Procyanidin B2?
As a natural antioxidant, Procyanidin B2 is increasingly used in pharmaceuticals, health products, and cosmetics due to its potent free radical-scavenging capacity and cardiovascular benefits. It is also recognized as one of the top ten medicinal botanical compounds.
| Product form | Application | |
| Cosmeceuticals & Personal Care | Hair growth essence, anti-stripping shampoos, scalp care ampoule, anti-aging face cream, eye cream, repair essence, etc. | Utilizing its ability to promote hair growth and strong antioxidant capacity. |
| Functional Foods & Dietary Supplements | Capsules, tablets, oral liquids, functional beverages, antioxidant gummies, etc. | As an oral supplement, it aims to provide systemic antioxidant support, protect cardiovascular health, enhance immunity, and internally improve skin and hair health. |

- In Germany and Romania, Procyanidin B2 preparations are used to treat microcirculation diseases.
- In France, a preparation for treating periodontal disease with Procyanidin oligomers or monomers as active substances has been invented and patented, and it is also made of grape seed proanthocyanidins.
- In Germany, proanthocyanidin preparations for the treatment of alcoholism were granted a patent.
In addition, the anti-wrinkle, whitening, moisturizing, and anti-radiation effects of Procyanidin B2 Apple extract have opened up broad prospects for them in the field of cosmetics. France has developed liposome microcapsule night cream, hair cream, and a mouthwash made of Procyanidin oligomers.
