Clary sage (Salvia sclarea), also known as Southern European Salvia miltiorrhiza, can be distilled or extracted with supercritical CO₂ from its inflorescence and stem leaves to obtain sclareol, the core raw material for the synthesis of Ambroxan/Ambroxide. As a delicate fragrance similar to ambergris, it is a high-end perfume fixative with strong diffusion and lasting properties.
The olfactory characteristics of ambroxide are contradictory and unified:
