Hello everyone, I am Clary Sage! You can also call me Salvia or European Sage. I belong to the Lamiaceae (mint) family, Salvia genus, and I'm a perennial herbaceous "lady."

-

I stand quite tall, reaching heights of 1-2 meters! My petals wear dresses of pink or pale purple, cloaked in broad, ovate bracts, while my corolla is an elegant icy blue (or violet-blue). My seeds are small, smooth, brown, oval-shaped nuts. I bloom between June and September, and my seeds ripen from July to September – the exact timing depends on where I call home.

I love environments with big day-night temperature differences; that's how I build up my captivating fragrance best! In the pre-flowering stage, I need plenty of water to nourish me for a good yield. When I'm in bloom, I adore having little bees as companions. They help me pollinate, making my flowers bloom better and producing more and finer Clary Sage oil and concrete. However, during my peak flowering period, I dread strong winds the most – they steal away my precious fragrance and reduce my oil content!

My homeland is the romantic Grasse region of France. Later, my family spread to Russia, the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine, and other Eastern European countries like Moldova, Uzbekistan, and Bulgaria. Even North Carolina in the USA has vast fields of us. Back in the 1970s, thanks to Professor Li Dianrong from Shaanxi, China, I was introduced to China from Eastern Europe. Now, my main homes in China are Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, and Xinjiang. I particularly love living in the shallow mountainous areas of northern China. The significant temperature swings between day and night, the just-right humidity, and the suitable altitude there allow me to emit a purer, richer scent.

What can I do for you? People have developed many products from me: Clary Sage oil, Sclareol, Sclareolide, and Ambroxide, among others.

  • -Clary sage oil: It is processed from my flowers. At room temperature, sage oil is a light yellow to orange liquid, exuding herbal, fresh, woody, spicy, and citrus aromas. Sage oil is a good helper for blending spicy and citrus flavors, and can also be used in tobacco and wine flavors.
  • info-220-228Sclareol: It is a white powder extracted from my inflorescences and stems, and leaves. The aroma of sclareol is very subtle, like amber (ambergris), delicate and long-lasting, and has a strong diffusion power! Sclareol is an ideal raw material for synthesizing ambergris products. People mainly use sclareol to synthesize natural ambergris substitutes such as sclareolide and ambroxan, and sometimes a small amount is directly used to blend flavors.
  • info-184-206Sclareolide: It is a white crystalline powder transformed from my good friend, sclareol. The melting point of sclareolide is 121-124℃, and the specific rotation is +38°~+42°. Sclareolide has a faint cypress-like woody aroma, and is soluble in ethanol and diethyl phthalate, but is difficult to dissolve in water. Sclareolide is an excellent flavor enhancer in the tobacco industry! In blended cigarettes, sclareolide can mask the coarse smell of tobacco, improve and enhance the aroma quality, give tobacco a pleasant characteristic aroma, and make the cigarette taste softer and mellower. Sclareolide is an expert in effective flavor enhancers!
  • info-184-166Ambroxide: It is a white crystalline powder synthesized from my other partner, sclareolide. Its melting point is 74-76℃, and the specific rotation is -21°~-24°. Ambroxide is a natural substitute for ambergris, one of the four most precious animal fragrances in the world! Ambroxide is often used as a fixative in high-end perfumes and cosmetics. It can greatly enhance the diffusion of fragrances and is very gentle on the human body. Ambroxide can also be used to add fragrance and fix the fragrance of skin, hair, and fabric products. For example, ambroxide can be found in soaps, talcum powders, and shampoos.

And here's something special! In China, I've found a dedicated partner who has been exploring my potential for nearly two decades: Xi'an App-Chem Bio (Tech) Co., Ltd.(APPCHEM). As a Nasdaq-listed supplier of botanical extracts, APPCHEM is an expert in transforming natural essence into high-quality raw materials, especially the Clary Sage plant series(Clary Sage oil, Sclareol, Sclareolide, and Ambroxide). APPCHEM eagerly looks forward to collaborating with like-minded peers in the industry, working together to propel the development of the Greater Health industry and share my fragrance and benefits with the world!
